CONTEXT
In rural Tanzania, access to education and vocational training is extremely challenging due to physical distance, costs of enrollment, and family responsibilities. For over 15 years, the local implementing partner Jifundishe (which means“teach yourself”) has aimed to bridge these challenges for rural villagers in the Arumeru district. Jifundishe offers a free public library, a free secondary school equivalency program, and scholarships for the highest performers. In 2023, programming will expand into two new classrooms in which a Vocational Launchpad will be hosted. This program will teach skills that can lead to direct income generation. With a focus on enrolling women, the Launchpad will offer initial practical training in sewing, shoe making and repair, and financial literacy. These are skills that can be put to use in even the most rural of areas and which are not required of formal education.
