Malawi, Enukweni

CONTEXT

The Enukweni Community Day Secondary School, situated in the Zigodo Nhlema Traditional Authority, Mtwalo, Mzimba North District, is the target of this project. The school is located approximately 50 kilometers from Mzuzu City.

The project’s primary objective is to address the absence of a computer lab and adequately trained teachers, both of which are hindering educational achievements. Despite the Malawian government introducing computer studies as an examinable subject in 2005 for senior secondary grades and updating the curriculum in the 2017/18 academic year to include computers for all secondary school grades, many Malawian schools struggle to afford ICT equipment. The cost of establishing a lab with 20 low-quality, used computers is a substantial portion of an average school’s annual budget, amounting to 16.5%. Furthermore, numerous rural schools lack the necessary infrastructure and resources to accommodate a computer lab.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

This project aims to address the lack of access to a computer lab and digital skills in the community, which limits job opportunities and educational advancement. It seeks to enable digitally enabled education by constructing a new computer lab equipped with computers, laptops, projectors, and internet connectivity. Additionally, it will provide teacher training in computing and digital pedagogy, establish a digital e-Library, and offer long-term maintenance plans for sustainability.

Overall, the project expects to impact over 200 students annually, enhancing their educational outcomes through digital skills and computer-assisted learning. It also aims to foster a partnership with a German partner school by providing internet access and communication tools.
