Groundbreaker Talents is a full-time Software Engineering scholarship program in Bukerere, Uganda, tailored to provide young women from financially constrained backgrounds with the opportunity to exploit their full potential and access a brighter future in the digital era.

During this time, you will live on our campus, fully immersing yourself in the learning experience. This residential model ensures that you rapidly gain the skills needed to secure entry-level positions in the IT sector upon completing the program, setting you on a path to launch your career in tech.

Who can apply?

  • Be a young African woman aged 18-25 years.
  • Be passionate about tech.
  • No access to educational opportunities due to financial constraints.
  • Live at the residence for one full year from January 2025 to January 2026 throughout the program.
  • Completed and graduated from High School, i.e. S.6. (possess a result slip/ certificate/ transcript/ photo of your results).
  • Be a resident of Uganda or the refugee communities in Uganda (have either a passport, National ID, village ID, or Refugee certificate of your respective country of origin).
  • Very fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Applicants must NOT currently study in a university or institute pursuing a bachelor’s or diploma (enrolled or on break).

Our scholarship offers a holistic package, covering accommodation, meals, training, and mentorship, and extracurricular activities, ensuring an optimal environment for focused learning and growth. In return, we expect you to commit to maximum benefit fully. You will reside with us for a year, dedicating your entire focus to your studies.

This residential scholarship is fully funded, and all accepted applicants will be required to pay a commitment fee of UGX 200,000 once for the whole duration of the program (non-refundable). The commitment fee can be paid all at once or in instalments. In the unfortunate event that a scholar discontinues the program after its commencement, they will be expected to repay the scholarship amount equivalent to the expenses incurred on their behalf during the scholarship period.

We prioritize candidates without access to educational opportunities due to financial constraints and who can demonstrate a strong dedication and passion for technology. Additionally, we value individuals who can show maturity in taking care of themselves and foster a sense of sisterhood with fellow participants in the program, creating a supportive community. We also emphasize leadership skills and a commitment to driving positive change in the world. Ultimately, we seek candidates willing to fully immerse themselves in their studies, displaying high focus and determination.

We want to see changemakers who have the power of technology to drive change in their communities. Show us your enthusiasm and dedication to excel in this domain whilst applying.

Our Groundbreaker Talents program does not require prior knowledge of IT. We will introduce you to all the basics. However, ensure your total commitment and motivation. 

No, this program is fully residential.

Yes, upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a certificate during the graduation ceremony. Refactory is a highly reputable learning institute in Uganda, and this certificate holds significant value in the industry.

That is our primary goal; however, it depends entirely on your performance and attitude. While we provide world-class teachers and experts to support you, the learning is on you. We do our best and expect you to put in yours as well. We do not guarantee jobs, but we will help facilitate the process by assisting in your professional development, providing resume-writing workshops, optimizing your LinkedIn profile, conducting mock interviews, and hosting recruitment drives with our employer partners.

Yes, we encourage everyone to apply if they have someone to take care of their dependents. If admitted to the program, you will be at our campus for one entire year. We need proof that someone is dedicated to taking care of the well-being of your child/children. We cannot provide any allowances.
