Be a Mentor

Mentoring Tomorrow’s Tech Leaders

The Groundbreaker Talents Mentorship Program connects global tech professionals with young African women participating in our full-time, residential tech training program in Uganda. Our talents undertake a one-year program in Software Engineering or pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration with a specialization in AI.

The mentorship is fully remote–giving students practical skills, industry exposure, and personal guidance, while mentors sharpen their leadership and connect with emerging tech talent.

For companies, it’s a chance to foster diversity, support social equity, and strengthen ESG goals—while accessing a pipeline of future tech leaders.

Frequently Asked Questions

The fully remote mentorship program serves as an integral pillar of the Groundbreaker Talents program, complementing the core training and enhancing the overall experience. It connects experienced tech professionals with young female tech talents from Uganda to provide guidance, support, and career development over a 9-month period.

The program aims to support young female tech talents in Uganda by providing guidance, skill development, and industry exposure to prepare them for their professional careers and help them thrive in technology-related fields.

The program also contributes to the growth and diversification of the tech industry, as mentors benefit not only by refining their leadership skills and expanding their network, but also by gaining fresh perspectives from the next generation of tech innovators.

Mentoring a young woman in Uganda offers the opportunity to help bridge the gender gap in tech, foster the next generation of talent, and contribute to a more diverse and innovative tech industry. You’ll have the chance to shape the future of tech while enhancing your own leadership and mentoring skills, expanding your network, and gaining fresh perspectives from emerging talent.

Mentors are expected to dedicate one hour per week. The meetings are fully remote and scheduled individually between you and your mentee to fit your schedule.

Mentors should have experience in the tech industry, knowledge of programming or software development (e.g., JavaScript or Python), and a willingness to share both technical and soft skills. Previous mentoring experience is not required.

As a mentor, you are expected to provide guidance, share experiences, offer constructive feedback, and support your mentee in setting and achieving their professional and personal development goals. You are not responsible for the mentee’s performance in the program itself. However, regular communication and active engagement are key to a successful mentorship experience.

The mentees are young female tech talents in Uganda who are undergoing their training to become software developers. They are eager to grow their technical and soft skills as well as gain insights into the tech industry.

Mentors and mentees will be paired based on shared interests, expertise, and career goals to ensure a productive and meaningful mentorship relationship.

Mentors will receive orientation and resources to guide the mentorship process. Additionally, a program coordinator will be available to address any concerns and provide support throughout the mentorship period. You will also have access to a network of fellow mentors to share experiences and advice.

Focus areas can include career guidance, technical skills development, networking, leadership, and soft skills like communication and problem-solving.

If challenges arise you can contact the program coordinator for advice and assistance. Open communication with your mentee is also encouraged to address issues early and collaboratively.

To apply, simply complete the online application form on our website. After reviewing your application, the team will contact you with the next steps.

You can contact our project manager, Esther, at esther@groundbreaker.org.
