DR Congo, Kinshasa

CONTEXT

The existing school building in Kinshasha, the capital of the DR Congo, was started in 2008 by a local aid organization for the neighboring orphanage. Unfortunately they ran out of money at some point and the school was never further built.

Because of that more than 250 children (grades 1-6) had to be taught in a shell of a building. This did not only lead to extreme safety and health risks but also made learning very difficult for the children. The construction work and classrooms were in desperate need to finally be completed.

The 10 new classrooms allow the children to learn in a proper and safe environment.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

The project directly improves the lives and opportunities of 250 children attending Lyceé St. Charles, their immediate families, and the Limete community. It provides a better foundation for the education of generations of students who attend the institution and hopefully lays the foundation for self-sustaining, ongoing development of the institution.

The goal was to complete the building by finishing the walls (interior and exterior), installing windows, doors, floors and ceilings, as well as a safe stairwell. In addition, we aimed to upgrade the 10 existing classrooms with electricity, locally made wood furniture, and new whiteboards and a computer for each classroom. We also aimed to upgrade the common areas as well as the restrooms.

The overarching goals of the project are as follows:

  • Provide better and safer education
  • Encourage more children to enroll in school and attend higher education
  • Instill a new vision for the children and community by showing them what proper education means and how it transforms the community as well as individual opportunities.
