Lebanon, Barr Elias

CONTEXT

The small country of Lebanon hosts more than 1 million Syrian refugees, more than half of them are children, often called the “lost generation”. In their flight from war at home, these children have missed school for years or never had access to an education. Organizations on ground trying to provide informal education to these children need to be creative because permanent infrastructures for refugees are forbidden. Due to poverty and harsh living conditions, these Syrian children often work in the fields to gain a small wage for their families.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION PHASE I

To provide for these students, the Acronis Foundation partnered with the German NGO ‘Zeltschule e.V.’, to construct a dependable school that doesn’t break refugee to official regulations. The new school is constructed of large, stable tents, to give more than 250 children the opportunity to learn and grow.

The students are schooled in two shifts, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. To ensure class attendance each student family receives food packages, so they don’t need to rely on their children’s salaries for survival. The community actively helps with school construction and the teachers are also refugees from Syria, living in the camp. For the community, building and staffing this school is an opportunity to create something meaningful and sustainable for their children. An education for their children also represents hope for their whole family.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION PHASE II

In partnership with Zeltschule e.V., the second stage of the construction focused on the set up of a computer lab through the provision of 12 laptops, 12 USB Sticks and CD with relevant learning content, 1 printer along with the consumables printers. This way, we aim to expand the learning tools to improve the learning environment.
