According to UNICEF, children in Cambodia fall behind in school for a couple of reasons. Often, they are not well prepared for school and they experience poor quality teaching and learning. Probably this is why they attend school irregularly. This eventually leads to many of them dropping out altogether. Additionally, many parents cannot understand the value of education and most cannot afford to send their children to school, particularly in rural areas.
In Prei Changha, students from three surrounding villages travel to attend school from kindergarten through grade six. Of the five classrooms at the school, three were wooden buildings with tiled roofs.
These three were in desperate need of reconstruction, as they have deteriorated over time and threatend collapsing, a serious risk to the children’s safety.
