Guatemala, Monte Mercedes

CONTEXT

Guatemala faces several challenges in education. In spite of having the largest economically active population in the region, they have a very low level of education. According to CEPAL (2022) 59,3% of men and 53,6% of women in the employed population have no schooling or at most completed primary school. Moreover, there is very low ITC literacy due to limited access to electricity, computers and internet. Even when cell phone access at home are large, there’s still a huge gap on computer and internet access.

These limitations are hindering educational development in all levels. For example, regression results of digital divide variables showed that students who do not use the school computer for homework are 1.2 times more likely not to achieve good results in Math. On the other hand, computer skills are a key skills required for the majority of jobs. Therefore, it is imperative to increase ITC literacy by enabling access to the necessary tools not only to improve education but to ensure children’s future access to the labor market.
