Malawi, Mzimba

CONTEXT

The Malawian government introduced computer studies as an examinable subject in 2005. Yet, Malawian schools are currently unable to afford ICT equipment as a lab of 20 low-quality, used computers equates to 16.5% of an average school’s annual budget. Further, many rural schools do not have the relevant infrastructure to accommodate a computer lab nor do they have the resources to build a computer lab.

The equipment of the Bwengu Community School with a computer lab will positively contribute to:

  • Lack of room to set up a computer lab
  • Lack of computers at the school
  • Lack of skills in teaching computer studies
  • Digital illiteracy among teachers and students alike
  • Inadequate teaching and learning resources

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

The targeted Bwengu Community Day Secondary School is located in the Mzimba North District. The lack of access to a computer lab and consequently lack of digital skills precludes people in the community from skilled jobs and curtails students from proceeding to further education. Digital skills have become prominent skills in today’s world both in higher education, but also in the job market. Therefore, the project will entail:

  • Renovation work
  • Furniture: 6 computer tables and 1 teacher table
  • Devices: 24 refurbished desktop computers, 1 refurbished computer, 5 laptops, 1 refurbished port switch, 2 projectors
  • Electrical wiring of the building
  • Teacher training
  • Maintenance
