The Malawian government introduced computer studies as an examinable subject in 2005. Yet, Malawian schools are currently unable to afford ICT equipment as a lab of 20 low-quality, used computers equates to 16.5% of an average school’s annual budget. Further, many rural schools do not have the relevant infrastructure to accommodate a computer lab nor do they have the resources to build a computer lab.
The equipment of the Bwengu Community School with a computer lab will positively contribute to:
- Lack of room to set up a computer lab
- Lack of computers at the school
- Lack of skills in teaching computer studies
- Digital illiteracy among teachers and students alike
- Inadequate teaching and learning resources
