Tanzania, Lemooti Village

CONTEXT

According to UNICEF, in 2007, Tanzania’s government pledged access to free primary school education for every child. Nevertheless, since then the registration of children attending primary school decreased strongly.
Approximately, 2 million children in the age between 7 and 13 years do not have access to education at all, which means they do not even learn basic skills. Furthermore, about 70 % of children aged 14-17 are not registered in secondary school.

The village Lemooti is situated in the district of Monduli in the Arusha region next to Lolkisale. It was founded in 2002. The village has a total population of 1,362 people, and 544 among them are children.

The Lemooti community highly values the importance of education, and they are determined to give their children the best education as possible. However, they are lacking funding capacities to provide a high-quality standard in the already existing primary school.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

With the support of a private donor, our implementing partner Upendo e.V. and the community renovated and extended the school’s building in consideration of government regulations. Four classrooms were renovated, and another four classrooms whose construction had already been started were completed and fully equipped. Furthermore, two toilet blocks with 16 pit latrines each were built.

The new classrooms and facilities help improve the school’s infrastructural environment for the benefit of many generations. Through the construction of the classrooms, there is a more convenient environment to learn and grow for the children, and consequently, the quality of education increases. The new toilet block contributes immensely to maintaining hygiene standards in the school and to preventing diseases.
