Groundbreaker Talents Win 1st & 3rd at Africa’s Talking AI Hackathon
Groundbreaker Talents secured both 1st and 3rd place at the Africa’s Talking Women in Tech 2G Meets AI Hackathon after developing AI-powered solutions that improve access to healthcare and education for underserved communities.
Fifteen Groundbreaker Talents participated in the Africa’s Talking Women in Tech: 2G Meets AI Hackathon in Kampala, collaborating in three teams to design digital solutions for real-world challenges. The event challenged participants to build AI applications that work on basic feature phones using USSD, SMS, and Africa’s Talking APIs, making technology accessible even without internet connectivity.
1st Place: Amani Care
The winning team developed Amani Care, an AI-powered women’s health companion that delivers trusted health guidance through USSD and SMS. Designed for women without internet access, the solution provides information on menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum care, and menopause, helping bridge critical healthcare information gaps in underserved communities.
3rd Place: AfriAssist
The third-place team built AfriAssist, an AI-powered education platform that delivers learning resources through SMS and USSD. The solution enables learners in rural communities to access courses, study materials, and educational guidance without requiring a smartphone or internet connection.
MamaCare
Groundbreaker’s third team presented MamaCare, an AI-powered maternal health companion for pregnant women in rural Uganda. Using SMS, voice, and USSD, the platform identifies pregnancy danger signs based on WHO and Uganda Ministry of Health guidelines and connects mothers with nearby healthcare providers when urgent support is needed.
Building Technology For Good
The hackathon provided an opportunity for Groundbreaker Talents to apply the software engineering skills they have developed throughout the program to real-world challenges. Working under time pressure, the teams collaborated to design, build, and present solutions with the potential to improve access to essential services across Africa.
Winning 1st and 3rd place reflects not only their technical abilities, but also their commitment to building technology with meaningful social impact.
Congratulations to all three teams—Amani Care, AfriAssist, and MamaCare—for representing Groundbreaker Talents with creativity, collaboration, and outstanding technical execution. We’re very proud of your hard work.
